Hair of the Dog was our first restaurant website and we were excited to work with a restaurant with such great reviews and online presence. With a 4 star rating on Yelp, best bar/pub downtown (NOW Magazine), best nachos (BlogTO), and best late night dessert (Toronto Life) mentions, we wanted to make sure these reviews were highlighted on the website.
We were also excited to test out a new model for websites focused on a simplified management model. Our team had been playing with managing a website through mobile but by using WordPress.com instead of going through a separate domain hosting service and installing WordPress separately, we were able to simplify the process even further. Using a one access, one login approach to web management, we wanted a site that the restaurant could go back to easily without remembering multiple logins and passwords. Learning a new interface can be challenging, by using the same interface for the entire web process, the client has a better chance of familiarizing themselves with the site and it’s features quickly.
Our focus was to design an easy to navigate restaurant website that was mobile and tablet friendly. We wanted to take advantage of great features like being able to click on a number and call directly, click on google map link that takes them directly to the map feature on their phone since we know that many people visit restaurant websites from their mobile phone. We also wanted to ensure essential information like hours of operation, menus, and contact information easily accessible. See our Restaurant Websites post for more details.
Hair of the Dog wanted to update their old website and highlight their new menu so we included 2 photography sessions to highlight their new menu items and take some new shots of the location. They also wanted to increase their social media presence so we added an easy facebook like and follow us on twitter option in the footer as well as an email option using the WordPress email updates feature.
We provided the client with multiple template options as fully functional websites so they could compare different layouts, designs, and features. And since these were functional websites we could test how they displayed on multiple browsers including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Safari, and Firefox, as well as multiple devices including HD tv, widescreen and normal screen monitors, iPhone, iPad, Android and Blackberry.
